What Are Stud Services? A Guide for Labrador Retriever Breeders

If you’re a Labrador Retriever owner hoping to breed your female dog, you’ve probably come across the term “stud services.” But if you’re new to the world of dog breeding, it might not be immediately clear what that means — or why choosing the right stud dog matters so much. At Hunter Retrievers, we want to make the process as transparent and straightforward as possible, so here’s everything you need to know.

What Is a Stud Dog?

A stud dog is a male dog made available for breeding. When a breeder or dog owner offers “stud services,” it means they are making their male available to breed with your female (called a “dam”) for a fee. The resulting puppies carry the genetics of both dogs, so the quality, health, and temperament of the stud dog directly influences the litter.

Why Does the Stud Dog Matter?

In Labrador breeding, the stud dog is half the equation. A well-selected male can strengthen a litter’s health, drive, conformation, and working ability. That’s why at Hunter Retrievers, our stud dogs aren’t just good-looking dogs — they’re proven performers with hunt test and field trial titles, and they’ve passed rigorous health certifications before we ever consider breeding them.

Our current stud dogs, Storm and Crash, both carry OFA-certified hips and elbows, clear CERF eye exams, and have been tested and cleared for genetic conditions like CNM and EIC — two conditions that can affect Labrador health and quality of life. Crash, our Master Hunter title holder, is also CHIC-certified and PRA-prcd clear. These aren’t just checkboxes — they’re our commitment to producing puppies that are built to last.

What Is the Stud Service Process?

Here’s a general overview of how stud services typically work:

The first step is timing. A female dog is only fertile during a specific window in her heat cycle, typically around days 10–14, though this varies. Many breeders recommend progesterone testing through a vet to pinpoint the ideal breeding days and maximize the chance of a successful litter.

Once the timing is confirmed, the female is brought to the stud dog’s location for a natural breeding. Some stud services also offer chilled or frozen semen for artificial insemination, which can be useful when distance is a factor.

A stud fee is paid at the time of breeding. At Hunter Retrievers, stud fees vary depending on the dog, and we accept payment via PayPal or Venmo. It’s worth noting that the stud fee is typically paid regardless of whether a pregnancy results — though some stud owners offer a free return breeding if the female misses.

After breeding, the dam’s owner is responsible for her care throughout the pregnancy, whelping, and raising the litter.

What Should You Look for in a Stud Dog?

If you’re considering outside stud services — whether with Hunter Retrievers or any other breeder — here are the key things to look for:

Health certifications are non-negotiable. OFA hip and elbow ratings, CERF eye clearances, and genetic testing for breed-specific conditions like CNM, EIC, and PRA-prcd are the baseline for any responsible breeding program. Always ask to see documentation.

Pedigree matters. A stud dog’s lineage tells you a lot about what you can expect in the puppies. Dogs with hunt test titles (Junior Hunter, Senior Hunter, Master Hunter) and field trial placements have demonstrated trainability and working drive — traits that are highly heritable.

Temperament is inherited too. A calm, biddable, people-oriented male is more likely to pass those qualities along to his offspring than a high-strung or difficult dog.
